What the article says

The article compares the performance of 59 listed Japanese family firms over the thirty years from 1994 to 2024 with that of Japan's non-family firms and of family and non-family firms in the United States, Germany and Canada, and draws on interviews with the heads of Toraya, Hosoo and Kaikado. Although they operated in one of the harshest economic environments in the developed world, Japan's family firms earned returns as good as or better than those of their peers, at far lower risk.

The authors argue that the advantage lies not in better forecasting but in a settled view of what the company exists for and of what may and may not change: what the DHBR edition calls the company's "architecture". A clear philosophy and a very long time horizon, put into practice through four disciplines (operations grounded in values, change built on tradition, long-term capital backed by conservative finance, and careful succession planning), underpin the resilience of these firms. The article concludes that these practices can be applied whatever a company's ownership structure or region.

Our post on the English edition covers the study design, the quantitative findings, the cases behind each discipline, the counter-example of Kongō Gumi and the implications beyond family ownership in more detail.
