At ICC Summit FUKUOKA 2021 (15–18 February 2021), Masahiro Kotosaka moderated Session 6A, "Building empires — Season 2," the sequel to Season 1 on the Ottoman Empire. This instalment moved into the modern era and asked which empires successfully adapted to change and which did not — what "structure" carried the winning side of the post-industrial-revolution world wars, and what "structure" today's largest "empires" (= corporations) actually rely on to govern at scale. 本シーズンは、COTEN 深井氏のレクチャーを起点に、「近代の帝国主義」 の定義から議論をスタートしました。産業革命を起点とする市場拡大競争、第一次世界大戦の勝敗、「国民国家モデル」 の有無による帝国の運命の分岐、そしてダイバーシティ＆インクルージョンへの対応の構造的弱さ――。後半は楽天 北川氏の問題提起 「意識すべきは『戦略』より『構造』」 を起点に、ベイン奥野氏による 「海洋帝国」「大陸帝国」 という現代企業の経営スタイルの分類、そして “現代の帝国” Amazon に学ぶ変化対応構造まで、議論は理論と実務を行き来しながら深まりました。
The season opened with a lecture by COTEN's Fukai on the definition of "modern imperialism." From there the panel worked through how the Industrial Revolution reset the competition for markets, what determined victory and defeat in the First World War, how adoption (or non-adoption) of the nation-state model diverged the fates of empires, and the structural weakness of empires faced with what we would today call diversity and inclusion. Bain's Okuno reframed modern firms as "maritime empires" vs. "continental empires." Rakuten's Kitagawa argued that the operative concern is not "strategy" but "structure," and the panel closed with what Amazon's astonishing organisational and system structure can teach about staying responsive to change.
