In 2007, Japan Tobacco Inc. (JT) made what was then the largest-ever Japanese M&A — the JPY 2.2 trillion acquisition of UK-based Gallaher — and reinforced its base as a global company. Recruit, for its part, has declared a goal of becoming Number One globally in talent and marketing by around 2030, while keeping roughly JPY 700 billion in M&A capacity at the medium-term horizon. The young heads of corporate strategy at both firms — Takehiko Tsutsui (Executive Officer, Deputy Head of Planning, JT) and Hiromasa Hayashi (Head of Corporate Strategy, Recruit Holdings) — joined Masahiro Kotosaka, then Associate Professor of International Management at Ritsumeikan University and an expert on internationalisation strategy, at Uzabase's SPEEDA Global Management Seminar. Together they had a genuinely heated debate about the globalisation of Japanese companies and what corporate strategy departments should look like in that role (a four-part series).
